History of Milton, WI

Milton was settled in 1838 by Joseph Goodrich, a settler from Alfred, New York who drew an imaginary intersection between Madison, Chicago, Janesville, and Fort Atkinson, and built a home there. The town was originally named Prairie du Lac but was later renamed after the poet John Milton, author of "Paradise Lost". In 1967, the villages of Milton and Milton Junction merged to form the current city of Milton.

One of the most noteworthy historical national landmarks in Milton is the Milton House, built by Joseph Goodrich in 1844 as an inn and general store. Known today as the Milton House Museum, it's the first and oldest grout building in the United States and served as a stop on the Underground Railroad. The museum features a 45-foot underground tunnel once used to transport fugitive slaves, and the site was officially registered as a National Historic Landmark in 1998.
