West Allis’s Story

 West Allis, Wisconsin, a suburb of the City of Milwaukee and located in Milwaukee County, is an older urban community of 60,000 citizens. Its neighbor, West Milwaukee, population 4,000 is significantly smaller. Both communities depended on heavy manufacturing until the mid 70's. Today, both communities are undergoing great revitalization efforts that are transforming former manufacturing sites into new office space, commercial, retail, and residential developments. Both are surviving the transitions and have become relatively homogenous communities.

West Allis, named after Allis-Chalmers Corporation which opened a plant here before the village incorporated, is home to The Wisconsin State Fair Park (which includes the Milwaukee Mile, and is the site of the annual Wisconsin State Fair). The Milwaukee Mile is one circuit in the annual Champ Car World Series and hosts NASCAR Busch and truck circuits each year. Adjoining the park is the Pettit Ice Center, long-time training home of the U.S. Olympic speed-skating team.

Conveniently positioned in the virtual center of the Greater Milwaukee/Waukesha metroplex, West Allis is an easy base from which to travel throughout the urban Southeaster Wisconsin corridor, which also includes the Racine/Kenosha area just inside the state boundary with Illinois and Greater Chicago.

In 2006 the city will celebrate its 100th aniversary. The celebration will include a parade, fireworks and a family festival. In those years, West Allis has either birthed or been home to notable Americans like Olympic speedskating idol Dan Jansen, Olympic speedskaters Chris Witty and Bonnie Blair, Harvey Kuenn, baseball player/coach/manager with the Detroit Tigers and Milwaukee Brewers, and the world-famous pianist/entertainer, Liberace.
