Reedsburg's Story

 Reedsburg, Wisconsin, is a quiet community centrally located in Columbia County in Central Wisconsin. Just across the Baraboo River and within minutes from the famed and popular Wisconsin Dells area, Reedsburg offers residents country quiet, wildlife and tons of summer fun.

In 1848, James W. Babb registered a claim to a piece of farming land deep into the Wisconsin Territory. Babb quickly cultivated some of the prairie and used the timber to build a log house, becoming the first white man to become a permanent resident in the area. Having established his claim, Babb left his meager possessions in the care of the Winnebago (Ho-Chunk) Indians who resided in the area, and returned to Ohio to bring other members of his family to their new home in Wisconsin. On the west end of the bridge on Main Street is a marker recognizing the ford which the Babb family and the Indians used to cross the river.

Shortly afterward, David C. Reed arrived, hearing of deposits of iron and copper in the area to build a saw and grist mill on the river and five shanties made of wood to house the laborers. Their shanties became known as Shanty Row and stood approximately where Main Street is today. Many of the buildings on Main Street date to the late 1800s, replacing the original Shanty Row structures. Credited for founding the village, Reed's name has been memorialized in its name. (Trivia: At the west end of the boulevard stands a monument marking the fact that the 90th meridian runs about 325 feet east of that marker. When the sun is directly at a 90' angle from the earth, it is exactly noon. As you travel east or west from this point, the time is not as exact. That's why Reedsburg residents boast that "the time is always right to visit our town!}

Located less than 15 minutes from the Wisconsin Dells, Reedsburg is a great place to avoid the summertime congestion. And the best way to do that is to take advantage of the many lakes and rivers that offer a wide variety of fishing places. Fishing opportunities can be found along the Reedsburg River walk trail within blocks of downtown Reedsburg. Whether fishing for Muskies at Lake Redstone or Brook Trout at Dell Creek, anglers can catch the fish of their choice, even in winter when ice fishing in the area offers excellent opportunities and is not to be missed. Or, if you prefer a long, easy drift you can canoe down the longest free flowing river in the nation - the Baraboo River.

Of course, the fabulous Wisconsin Dells provides a wealth of family fun - and great summer jobs for the kids! But, Reedsburg also offers some of the area's most exhilarating attractions: Norman Rockwell Exhibit, Reedsburg Historical Society and Pioneer Log Village, the 400 State Trail or pick up a Historical Walking Tour guide from the Chamber Depot.
