About Portage, Wisconsin
Hub of the Upper Midwest

Portage’s Story
Portage, Wisconsin, has been a hub
of transportation in the Upper Midwest since long before the city was
incorporated in 1854. When early voyagers traveling on the Wisconsin
and Fox Rivers reached this area and needed to continue traveling by
water, they had to carry, or "portage," their craft over this land
bridge from one river to the other. Still a hub for travelers, today
Portage hosts three Interstate Highways (I-90, I-94, I-39) plus four
state highway systems (Hwy 78, Hwy 33, Hwy 51 and Hwy 16). More than
70,000 vehicles go through the Portage area on interstate highways
every day, according to 2000 statistics.
Portage is the county seat for Columbia
County. Thanks to a diverse employer base and a quality work force,
Columbia County area has historically kept its unemployment rate near
or under the state’s unemployment rate. Portage has been blessed with
an abundant number of quality employees. With its proximity to the
interstate system and the state capital, many residents live in Portage
and commute to employment for the state of Wisconsin in the Madison
area.
The city of Portage, Wisconsin, has a
wealth of city parks and outdoor recreational activities, including 14
city parks, a swimming lake as well as an indoor swimming pool.
Visitors and residents are minutes from seven area golf courses.
Curling enthusiasts have been at home in Portage since 1852. Portage is
very proud of the many natural, historic and wildlife walking trails —
specifically the scenic walking trail located on the newly constructed
Wisconsin River Levee. Outdoors enthusiasts enjoy the more than 30,000
acres of waterways and wildlife areas in the immediate Portage and
Columbia County area. This area supports a multitude of hunting and
fishing opportunities with an abundant supply of white tail deer, wild
turkey, geese and other waterfowl, and a wide variety of small game.
Fishing is abundant in the area waterways and lakes, as well as
canoeing and boating in the Swan Lake area, Wisconsin River and Lake
Wisconsin. The nearby Wisconsin Dells area is an internationally famed
home to family attractions of all types, historical charm and natural
wonders unique only to this region of Wisconsin.
As a trade center for central Wisconsin,
the downtown retail district was a beehive of activity as early as the
1860's. Many of the buildings have been preserved in their original
Victorian architecture, providing a colorful background for the busy
retail area of today. The District was listed on the National Register
of Historic Places in 1995 and was designated a Main Street Community
in 2003.
