About La Crosse, Wisconsin
God's Country

La Crosse's Story
La Crosse, Wisconsin, is a city of
52,000 located in La Crosse County in western Wisconsin, along the
Mississippi River and at the confluence of the La Crosse and Black
Rivers. La Crosse ("the cross") was the site of an 18th century fur
trading post and medical stop for traders traveling down the
Mississippi River. At the time it was called Prairie La Crosse.
Established in 1842, serious development brought eager settlers from
New York, Ohio and Vermont to build grist and sawmills to service the
expanding rail industry. Those earliest settlers were soon joined by
German and Norwegian immigrants drawn to the expansive pine groves
spread throughout western Wisconsin.
As the Civil War forced the closing of
river commerce from the south, La Crosse offerd northwestern traders a
ready route to eastern commerce, and when a rail bridge was built
across the Mississippi at La Crosse, still more new markets emerged -
with La Crosse at the hub.
Together with surrounding communities,
the La Crosse metropolitan area was, according to the 2000 census, home
to nearly 100,000 people. The city forms the core of the United States
Census Bureau's La Crosse Metropolitan Statistical Area, which includes
all of La Crosse County in Wisconsin and Houston County, Minnesota
(composite 2000 population of 126,838).
The city of La Crosse, Wisconsin is
situated along a scenic route the parallels the meandering Mississippi.
A prominent local feature is the large (25-foot) carved American Indian
in Riverside Park that stands at the base of State Street, seeming to
direct river traffic below, where both The American Queen and The Mississippi Queen are permanently docked.
The county seat of La Crosse County,
this area surrounding the modern city of La Crosse is often referred to
as "God's Country" because it was unspoiled by glaciers that flattened
much of the rest of the upper Midwestern United States. La Crosse is
surrounded by towering bluffs, the most prominent of which is Grandad's
Bluff, noted in the great prairie novel, Life on the Mississippi
penned by the incomparable 19th-century American author and populist
Mark Twain. On a clear day, residents and visitors can view parts of
three states - Wisconsin, Minnesota and Iowa - from Granddad's lap.
La Crosse County is also the home of
current and former major league baseball players Damian Miller, Jarrod
Washburn and Ed Konetchy.
